With the right tools and support in place, your future may look and feel very different than it does right now.

What is Sex Addiction?

Addiction is the compulsive physiological need for a specific substance or behavior. Addictions vary in many ways, from legality to its damaging effects. Yet, one thing they have in common is they take control of your life. In other words, when you get an urge or craving, the need to respond can get very intense, so much so, you feel you must satisfy it. Likewise, you may have physical and emotional reactions if you choose not to respond. As a result, life, or areas of life, can become unmanageable without your addiction.

A component of the definition of sex addiction is the compulsive need to act upon sexual urges. Likewise, behaviors are excessive and uncontrollable. There is some controversy surrounding the reality of sex addiction. In 2013, sex addiction did not make it into the DSM. Within the debate, some feel cultural norms and society define what sexual behaviors are acceptable or excessive. Likewise, some feel there is a lack of scientific-based evidence. As a result, the exclusion from the DSM limits opportunities for healthcare coverage and funding for research.

However, many professionals and organizations have opted to stay the course. They continue to treat and fund research studies for sex addiction. Likewise, they understand the reality of the addiction. Many also see similarities between other behavioral addictions, such as gambling.

Walk By Faith Counseling - Why is it so hard to escape from the clutching grip of sex addiction?

Why is it so hard to escape from the clutching grip of sex addiction?

One reason sex addiction may be so hard to overcome is that it can change the wiring in the brain. Studies show over time, sex addiction can change the way the brain appears on an MRI. As a result, the way you think, react, and respond can change as your addiction becomes more heavily rooted within.

An article by CBNNEWS.com points out that sex addiction may be hard to break free from because, unlike drugs or alcohol, sexuality is part of who you are. Another reason why the addiction can be so difficult to overcome is because of the chemicals released during sexual activity. (www.cbn.com)

Although the challenges of overcoming sex addiction are great, the rewards of recovery can make it all worth it. With determination, motivation, and the right treatment plan, you have every reason to hope you, too, can enjoy life in recovery.
